I’m Silvian Hettich, a dutch cinematographer with a focus on narrative work, film and documentary.

At high school my film journey started. Trough the subject video art I worked in asignment for small bushiness, local television and made short films. After high school I worked at Vantage Film Weiden, Germany, where my passion for high-end cinema was born. In 2013 I started at the Royal Institute of Theater, Cinema and Sound (RITCS) in Brussels, Belgium, to graduate with great honours in cinematography in 2016. After filmstudies, I moved back to the Netherlands and started working as a freelance cinematographer on short films, documentaries, commercials and as a camera operator on fiction and documentary (television) series and feature films. I really like to work on projects with a social relevance, a story that can help people to become better people and to look at ways differently.

Mainly, I shoot on my own camera package. I prefer to work this way, because it’s tailored exactly to my wishes and I don’t have to spend time thinking about equipment, but can spend time developing a visual language for the film instead.

I think my visual style can be described as naturalistic. I love when you can’t notice there was a film crew but rather be absorbed by the story and images and really forget you are watching a movie, but are in a different world for a moment.

Lighting and use negative lighting, to be at the edge of wat a sensor or film stock is capable of and making bold choices is one of my favorite things to do on set. Every day I enjoy how light is falling trough windows, wrapping around someone’s face.

Operating a camera for me is an art as well, you can put so much emotion in how the camera moves and really expand and elevate the actors play. How to frame, choose the right focal length and lens characteristics, these are import tools available and strong choices to make.
